Preparations Outside U.S.:
Stephen Stahl's Clinical Pearls* (Consult your physician before making any change in
your treatment.)
- Prolongs QTc on EKG.
- Currently 'on hold' from marketing until relationship of QTc prolongation to ventricular
arrhythmias and sudden deaths clarified.
- Before withdrawal from marketing, pre-treatment EKG was recommended.
- Contraindicated in patients with prolonged QT intervals, with significant cardiac
disease, uncorrected hypokalemia, and concomitant use of other drugs that prolong the QT
interval
- Accepted as efficacious for treatment of schizophrenia
and bipolar disorders
- Anecdotal reports of use in children, and treatment-refractory cases, and for
positive symptoms of psychosis in disorders other than schizophrenia
- May cause less weight gain than other antipsychotics.
- Never say never, but essentially no EPS at any dose.
- Can cause nasal congestion and decreased ejaculatory volume.
